STANDING STRONG with our Pittsburgh Jewish Family - Kaddish & Mincha Prayer Service

We will be holding a Kaddish and Mincha Prayer Service today (Sun, Oct 28) at 5:30 pm. Let us come together to recite a prayer and strengthen each other in memory of the victims. At Chabad Bay Area, 2047 W. Main St, Suite B7, League City, TX 77573. (This is a brief service to conclude at approx. 6 pm).

Also, the Houston Jewish community has organized a community-wide outdoor candlelight vigil to be held tonight at 7:15 pm, at the JCC (back parking lot by the tennis courts) 5601 S. Braeswood Blvd, Houston, TX 77096.

The Rebbe often reminded us of the biblical verse “and the living shall take to heart.” At times of increased darkness, let us think and try to find ways to increase the goodness and light with positive deeds.

For example:

  • Increase in unity. The attacker harbored senseless hatred towards Jewish people. Let us increase our love for every one of our people. We are all one family.

  • Show Jewish pride. Especially at this time, demonstrate that we are proud of our Jewish identity. Whether it is through affixing a mezuzah, wearing a kippah, or simply sharing the ethics and values of Torah with those around us (See: Seven Laws for a Beautiful Planet).

  • Add a mitzvah in memory of the victims. Whether reciting the daily Shema, wrapping tefillin, lighting Shabbat candles, giving Tzedakah or any other mitzvah, let’s try to add a good deed and dedicate it to the memory of those ruthlessly killed.

May our collective mitzvot help bring comfort and peace at this challenging time. May we soon see the day when "G-d will wipe away the tears from every face" with the arrival of the era of Redemption for all Mankind.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Yitzchok Schmukler
Chabad of the Bay Area

P.S. If there is any way we can be of assistance, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

New course off to a great start!

The new JLI course, Wrestling With Faith, got off to a great start this week!

It is not too late to join us for the next 5 lessons!

Schedule: Tuesdays at 7:30 pm

Wrestling with Faith delves into some of the “big issues” that keep people from intimate faith with G-d:

  • How do we reconcile compelling evidence for evolution and the age of universe with a bible that tells a different story?
  • Why do I need G-d and religion if I can live perfectly well without Him?
  • Does G-d really care about the nuances of Jewish practice?
  • The concept of “Jewish Chosenness” seems racist, and Judaism seems to impose gender roles and interfere with our relationship choices?
  • How can we relate to a loving and caring G-d while experiencing tragedy and suffering?
  • Is it even possible to develop a relationship with a G-d I cannot see?

Try it out! Join us this Tuesday at 7:30 pm for the 2nd lesson!

WrapStars is catching on: Researchers Link Tefillin to Health

A pilot study led by researchers at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine suggests Jewish men who practice wearing tefillin, which involves the tight wrapping of an arm with leather banding as part of daily prayer, may receive cardiovascular health benefits.

The researchers propose that benefits may occur though remote ischemic preconditioning that results in protection during heart attacks. The results are available online in the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology.
